MEET THE BOONARAAAS
april 2001
NB: When
I heard your (probably) 1st 7"EP "The Incredible Return Of Boonaraaas"
I was really nicely surprised with your great songs. What are your biggest
musical influences?
B: "The Incredible
Return of The Boonaraaas" is actually our second 7"-single. The first single
is called "She Sound 2000" and is out on "Thunderbaby Records", too. All kinds of punkrock and garagepunk, for
example Trashmen, Sonics, Saints, Ramones (we are very sad that Joey Ramone
is suffering from cancer), Groovie Ghoulies, Swinging Neckbreakers, Phantom
Surfers, Mummies, Detroit Cobras, Problematics ...
NB: How long do
you exist as band and how many releases do you have?
B: Approx. 5 years.
"She Sound 2000", 7"-single on Thunderbaby
Records; "The Incredible Return of The Boonaraaas",
7"-single on Thunderbaby Records; "U.G.L.Y. Girl", LP on Thunderbaby Records; Splitsingle with The Reekys on Swindlebra
Records. In summer a new LP on Thunderbaby Records
NB: When and how
did you meet? Tell me more about yourselves.
B: We all worked
at the same popcorn machine at our local cinema and discovered that we
were all wearing the same buttons and so it was no problem to find our
way to our musical style.
NB: Did you play
in some other bands before?
B: Patricia still
plays bass in Germany's #1 surf band "Cave4", Veronika played bass in Germany's
#1 girl pop band "Orange Crush" which is no longer existing and Christina
played drums in Germanyís #1 rock'n'roll garage band "The Scamps".
NB: Who is writing
the songs?
B: We wish to
have several ghost writers, but actually we have to write the songs ourselves.
We all sit together and plan something together in our local pizzeria.
NB: On "U.G.L.Y.
Girl" LP you covered The Ramones and The Beatles. Who do you like more?
B: We love both.
NB: What do you think
about feminism and riot girl bands?
B: We think that
feminism influenced the development of each woman's life. It's still important
we live it, but don't talk too much about it.
NB: Do you like
comics and what are your favorites?
B: Yes, absolutely.
We like especially She-Hulk and Hulk, also Batman, Superman, Simpsons,
Gaston and Hello Kitty.
NB: Cecile Musy
played organ on some songs on your 1st 7". What happened with her?
B: Cecile was
playing in our band, but she was eating too many frogs and so people from
the german society for prevention of cruely to animals came and took her
away.
NB: Somewhere
I read that somebody from Boonaraaas plays in Curly Wurly. Is it your side
project? I must be honest I didn't like Curly Wurly. It's too indie pop
for my taste.
B: Two years
later she was seen playing organ with Curly Wurly.
NB: What
can we expect from Boonaraaas in the future?
B: We plan to
do a new LP in summer and we will do a video, and then we expect to get
into the "heavy rotation" of MTV.
NB: Do
you play gigs often? I hope I'll see you soon here in Holland.
B: Yes, we play
a lot of times. All over Germany and sometimes in foreign countries like
Italy, England, Belgium, Denmark. Once we played in Holland, Groningen
at the Vera Club. We liked it very much and hopefully we will do some more
shows in Holland. So if you know someone who can organize gigs let us know.
