In September 2000 I went to Berlin. One
night when I didn't know where to go I checked the guide for night clubs
there and saw Los Banditos picture - 5 guys with "Reservoir Dogs" looks
playing at "Roter Salon". I don't understand german very well, but words
like: surf, beatclub, twang-beat, ... told me that Los Banditos could be
something interesting for me. Concert was big surprise - I never saw such
great instro band before. Los Banditos were really great, audience went
crazy - I don't remember how long they played, but I know after they came
back on bis few times and gig ended I wanted more. After this gig I became
their fan and I have all their records. They are great guys and here is
short interview with them:
11-02-2000
NBZ:
How long does the band exist and did you play
in some other bands before Los Banditos? (If you did, which kind of music
were they?)
LB:
L.B. was founded early 1996 as trio, influenced
by the eastgerman Surfstyle. Some months later the Organplayer and the
DJ join the band. All members has played in different bands before,
Punk, HC, R'n'R, most heavy and loud shit. But sometimes we've had enough
about it and went back in time, always looking for our roots, to create
our special style, to play.
NBZ:
I saw you live in Berlin 21st September and
it was really great. Your records are great too. You play instrumental
surf rock, but with lot of elements from other music styles. I think it
would be very interesting to tell us what music do you listen to at home
and what are your influences.
LB:
We're listen to every music on this planet.
We like good vibrations from all over the world, maybe Sounds from Turkey,
India or China will influence our new album. We're always looking for interesting
Sounds and we find them in all music styles.
NBZ:
Live you also played few vocal numbers. They
sounded pretty punk r'n'r. Can we expect something like that on records
too?
LB:
Not yet. Sure there will be some lyrics on
our futural releases.

NBZ:
It's very unusual for 60s influenced band
like you to have dj.
LB:
Business as usual is too boring for us. We
all like the black gold (and the colored too) and Joe is our turntablewizzard.
Before he joined L.B. he was a drummer in another Band. He's a dj since
a long time, and we like the same stuff. His sound effects and samples
are the bridge to the 90's. We like this vibrations between the old and
the new sounds or technologies, and everywhere they come together, to have
a love affair, we listen very interested.
NBZ:
What do you think about combination : surf
music with techno/drum & bass? I heard techno version of "Misirlou"
and it was very interesting.
LB:
No doubt, it's possible to mix it. The most
new styles are created by unusual mix-experiments. We all are sound explorers
at work.
NBZ:
Maybe you won't agree with me, but listening
to your records I discovered that your surf instro music reminds me a lot
of 60s/early 70s east european surf beat - like bands from Pebbles compilations
"Surf
Behind The Iron Curtain". I also recognized
melody of one famous Russian song (I'm not sure what's it called - "Nights
In Moscow" maybe?).
LB:
Yes, of course we are influenced from all
the easteuropean stuff, from where we get a lot of our inspirations. We
like to transport this spirit in to the future by our own way.
NBZ:
And now one serious question. You are Los
Banditos, but how bad are you really?
LB:
Really bad! Everyone of us stayed at prison
or escaped for it. But from our hearts we are good guys, and that's the
important'st thing. Check it out!
NBZ:
It seems you are playing gigs pretty often,
but I had to go from Holland to Germany to see you. Are you planing some
gigs in Holland in the future?
LB:
Yes we do, but there are no definite dates
this time, maybe we'll organize a NL-tour in spring or summer next year.
NBZ:
When can we expect new release?
LB:
We've released a new 7" on sheep-records,
Zürich ( www.sheeprecords.com
)
and there are some more ideas and plans for single-projects, remixes and
an album also in the next months. In January 2001 we'll record all this
new material, but a release date isn't fixed this time.
NBZ:
What are your plans for the future?
LB:
A lot of work (also fun) is waiting for us:
gigs all over europe (Italy, Scandinavia also Holland), new releases,
licensing our stuff for other countries, develop
our homepage www.losbanditos.org
in to a communicationbase for an international banditos-network and so
on.
Last but not least: a lot of love & sex.
