THE UNCHAYNED - DEMO CD
The Unchayned are not unknown to loyal No Brains readers. Here is their 2nd demo and it kick ass even louder and more primitive than the 1st one. I don't know how to describe them, but I will try. Try to imagine UK 60s garage freakbeat bands and primitive Sonics sound melted into something really great and cool and of course 1000% trashy. The Unchayned are definitely one of the most promising bands at the moment. It's unbelievable that they're still waiting for official release. It's pity 'cos these guys and girl already changed their music a bit - they are going further without leaving some release behind. Labels - check them out!!!!! The Unchayned are really great. 4 great songs - very 60s sounding, but still modern enough. Great 60s 'back from the grave' garage guitar sound, cool early angry Lennon sounding vocal and great super primitive rhythm section. Titles are: "Using Your Head", "I Want My Woman", "Hang Up" and "Yes I Do".

WIRED FOR MONO "RE: GOLDEN HITS EP" CD EP, Big Brothel 2004
Wired For Mono are really fucking mind-blowing!!!! I never heard about this band, just got this CD from Staffan (Big Brothel) together with new Sons Of Cyrus CD. I really can't find enough good words to describe how great this band is. This is 5 song CD EP. Their music is weird mix of early 70s r'n'b in Rolling Stones vain with some 60s garage + modern rock influences. But the most important thing - the songs are really great - arrangements, vocal, guitars, production - it all sounds really cool... It's different to choose favorites, but I like "Losin' Street" just a little bit more than the others.

V.A. "DEATH BY SALT - A SLUG MAGAZINE COMPILATION" CD, Eighteen Percent Gray Records 2004

Slug Magazine is cool free magazine from Salt Lake City. They cover alternative rock scene very wide - from stoner rock via weird blues to rap hip hop, from White Stripes to some strange metal bands to electro, industrial. There are lot of interviews and reviews - from local bands to worldwide known artists. There are also lot of great ads and articles. In this number (May 2004) there is interview with T-Model Ford + The Rapture, Bjorn Leines, Cattle Decapitation, Glasspack... But the greatest thing they did for local scene is 3 CD compilation with 59 bands from Utah. It's done really nicely in cool box with very thick booklet with info and photo of each band. Unfortunatelly this review would be too long to write about each band, so I'm gona name some that I personally like a bit more than the rest: Chinese Stars (rock'n'shake garage punk), Redd Tape (weird indie band with some Sonic Youth and psych influences), The Numbs (cool funky rap hip hop trip hop), Cosm (weird mix of electro, drum'n'bass + indie with girl vocal), Books About UFO's (strange indie garage rock), Erosion (sort of 70s psych, stoner rock + americana), The Corleones (modern nu wave punk), Hello Amsterdam (funny name for cool indie Brit pop punk band), Rope Or Bullets (my fave - cool early 80s sounding electro minimal synth punk), Deep Six Holiday (electro industrial techno - sounds like Underworld meet Aphex Twin), Fifi Murmur (with 80s, 90s and psych influences - sort of indie rock, cool band), The Debonairs (psychobilly garage punk, cool), Mental Midgets (early 80s style hardcore meets garage trash), Facts (white hip hop with weird samples), Dulcesky (80s post punk gothic)... Compiling these CDs was probably lot of work, but it's great presentation of local scene. All songs (except for 1) are studio recordings with good sound quality.

V.A. "GUITAR ACE - LINK WRAY TRIBUTE" CD, MuSick Recordings 2003
When I saw this CD in my mailbox, I said finally somebody did the right thing!!! "Guitar Ace" is Link Wray tribute, and what a tribute!!! Link Wray really deserves it, maybe he had to wait a bit longer, but he got one of greatest tribute CDs I ever heard. It's obvious that all artists here did their songs with lot of love and respect and the most important, they were really inspired by his music. CD is great mix of vocal and instrumental tracks. We have lot of very well known bands here, but also bands I unfortunately don't know and it seems they are really cool. The biggest surprises are Bleed (their version of "Ain't That Loving You, Babe" is real killer - reminds me of Monsters), Hypnomen and Downers (both great instro surf garage with cool fuzz guitar sound), Evan Foster (cool manic rock'n'roll), Pollo Del Mar (play "Jack The Ripper" in Las Vegas night bar instro surf style), The Volcanos (their version of "Comanche" is cool 50s primitive instro r'n'r), Four Piece Suit (they close this CD with really cool, a bit jazzy, version of "Roughshod" with great sax). OK, now we'll check some more known bands (at least to me) on this great comp: Spy-Fi do really weird and cool version of "The Shadow Knows", I also love The Space Cossacks, as well as Fifty Foot Combo and their exotic cover of "Slinky", Boss Martians are also nice surprise with their weird groovy garage kraut version of "Fire And Brimstone" - sounds Birth Control ("Gamma Ray") go garage, Amy and her Gore Gore Girls made great yeah yeah girl beat garage cover of "Baby Doll" and of course I can't forget Jackie And The Cedrics and their crazy instro surf. There is more good stuff here, but I will leave these as surprise when you buy this CD, or double 10" vinyl on Animal Records (Spain).

V.A. "HEAVY SURF" CD, Reptile Records
"Heavy Surf" is, according to cat. no. (RROO1), the first release on new cool surf label - Reptile Records from Glenwood Springs, US. It's compilation CD with 25 tracks featuring more and less known bands. They are presented with 1 or 2 tracks. Mark Brodie opens this CD with classical surf tune with weird intro. Next are The Heatscores. Their track is supercool acid psych surf - weird combination which I like a lot. Cadillac Angels are more instrumental r'n'r - cool, raw and dusty guitar sound - great band. 3 Balls Of Fire and "Rumble In The Congo" remind me a bit of The Mutants from Finland - really mind-blowing tune, groovy as hell with cool psych surf guitar through wah wah and other weird effects. Davie Allan And The Arrows are veterans of instro r'n'r surf scene. Well, I'm always a bit skeptical about old guys still playing, like Dick Dale. Still, I must admit Davie Allan And The Arrows sound fresh and rockin'. Lombego Surfers are great and wild with distorted guitars, but technically very clean and such combination sounds great. Very dangerous track to hear while driving. Daikaiju are one of the weirdest instro surf bands I ever heard. Sounds like progressive surf psych. I never heard anything like this before, but it works. Surf Report are raw and fast, but a bit more classical surf style. They are presented with 2 tracks that sound cool and modern. The Reventlos are also presented with 2 tracks. "King Kkong" is hard rockin'n surf (grunge surf). Cool mix! Robert Johnson And Punchdrunks are also cool and fast, wile Thesurfmotherfuckers covered early Cure hit "Killing An Arab". Cool oriental surf psych - great band! Insect Surfers are also cool - weird psychotic and wavey surf. Huevos Rancheros are one of the most known bands on this CD. Cool Latin acid surf with organ in background. If you can imagine Motorhead with surf guitar, you'll get Planet 7. They really have good sense for humor and they are very entertaining - "Lara's Theme" (from Doctor Zhivago movie) sounds soooooooo great: loud metal rhythm guitars + very gentle soloing surf guitar + weird spacey sounds - simply mind-blowing. Plank presented with 2 tracks are actually not surf, well instrumental - heavy, cool, but maybe too heavy. Surfin' Dead are some kinda psychobilly surf that I like a lot. The Surf Sluts are modern hot rod surf - one more dangerous track for car ride. Hillbilly Soul Surfers are cool swinging rockabilly surf. Chum have original sound. Their song starts mystic, then becomes very heavy and aggressive and ends more acid psych - weird band with lot of rhythm changes. Los Plantronics play "Satan Stole My Surfboard", satanic surf - weird and a bit too complex. After all, "Heavy Surf" is actually the best name for this CD. Lot of weird bands who dare to mix different styles with surf 'tamplate'.
