THE MONOCAINES "BEAT BEAT BEAT" 7"EP, Copase Disques 2004 |
The Monocaines are new big thing coming from Hamburg, Germany. Strongly influenced by 60s beat soul and freakbeat sound mixed with 80s garage. Well, it sounds pretty retro, but not in the way you can say that The Monocaines copy someone. Their style is old fashioned, but unique. Vocal reminds me a bit of the Creeps. There is also some early Jam flavor, but The Monocaines are much more souly, dancy and very entertaining. 4 tracks with cool Hammond organ, loud beat guitars and groovy rhythm section. My faves are: "It's Not The Way" and "highest Prize". I hope that Monocaines will surprise us soon with full length album. And till then this EP is really great fun.

THE MOVING SOUNDS "DON'T SLEEP ON THIS!" CD, Copase Disques 2004 |
Man, this is fucking great!!!!! It must be something in Swedish air or maybe in their genes that makes them play such great garage. The Moving Sounds are really nice surprise. Totally mind blowing mix of 60s garage and Scandinavian 80s garage - all flavored by groovy soul r'n'b sounds!!!! All songs are soooooo cool, no way I can say which ones are my favorites. Singer is sooooooo great - somewhere between Charlatans and Creeps, but still has his own style. Hammond organ fills all gapes, rhythm section is great and groovy + fantastic freakbeat fuzz guitar player. Add high quality production with great vintage mood and you'll get one of the greatest albums you heard!!!!! Most tracks are band originals + 3 less known covers.

| NEUROTIC SWINGERS "FRENCH FRIES, GUILLOTINE AND LOVE" CD, Dead Beat Records 2004 |
I'm glad that Neurotic Swingers released an album on Dead Beat Records - 'cos they are really the perfect band for this label and other way around. Fast and dirty punk'n'roll with good pumping riffs, distorted solo guitar, catchy melodies, but dirty enough not to sound power poppy. Collection of 13 snotty punk rock killers with the best spirit of Saints, Dead Boys, Johhny Thunders And Heartbreakers + UK 70s stuff like Sex Pistols or early Vibrators. Just check out "Speed Drinker", "Party Killer", "I'm Just Losing My Soul" (real killer), "7 Drugs In 7 Days", " '77" or "Please Hate Me". You also get really cool "I'm Just Losing My Soul" video!!

| THE PAYBACKS "HARDER AND HARDER" CD, Get Hip 2004 |
2nd album of Detroit Paybacks. Slight change comparing with their 1st melodic and catchy. Songs are now harder, well "Harder And harder", less punk, more rockish and I have to be honest I think this fits better with their image and Wendy's vocal. Still we get lot of good rockin' riffs and energy. Well, it takes 2 songs before The Paybacks really start rockin', but from the 3rd song "Me", the ice is broken. Good stuff for smokey pubs. Last song is T. Rex cover "Celebrate Summer".

| THE SATELLITERS "HASHISH" CD, Dionysus 2005
Brand new album of one of the coolest neo 60s garage punk bands - The Satelliters. "Hashish" is maybe a psychedelic title, but music is fuzz loaded garage punk at its best. I guess the most No Brains readers know who The Satelliters are, so I'll skip the story about them and go straight to "Hashis". It starts with "Go Away" which is so so, 'cos every next song is more than mind-blowing. Most of the tracks are band's originals + few cool 60s covers. It's almost impossible to chose favorites. I heard all Satelliters albums and 7"s they released till now and honestly this is one of the best (if not the best)!!!! All songs are so catchy, have great fuzz riffs + organ, harp, good breaks, fantastic fuzz guitar solos. I just adore: "Anything I do", "You Byrn Me Up And Down" (great We The People cover), "Burn Out" (fuzzed biker movie soundtrack tune), "1969 - The End Of Time" awesome fuzz garage psych, with apocalyptic sphere, "Wham Bam Thank You Mam" is Small Faces cover in French with super loud fuzz... Steve sings better than ever. Definitely a must have!!!
