SUPER 88 "METEOOR" demo CD |

One of the coolest surprises lately. Super 88 don't have any official releases yet. This is their 4 track demo CD and these guys are really special. Very original mix of 70s heavy psychedelia (kinda stoner rock), surf hot rod and garage punk. They have strange destroyed and fuzzed guitar that I like a lot. Also cool vocal and most important, good songs.

SWEATMASTER "SONG WITH NO WORDS" CD, Bad Afro Records 2004 |

It seems it's IN that Bad Afro bands do cover albums with their favorite songs. After Baby Woodrose, here we have "Song With No Words" EP (well, I would call it mini album as there are 8 songs). Anyway, 1st two tracks are written by Sweatmaster and they are really great - well a bit more modern and indie than I expected, but really cool. Covers are adapted to new Sweatmaster sound. They did pretty different stuff - from 60s garage (Music Machine "Talk Talk") to 70s proto punk (The Modern Lovers "She Cracked"), or punk like Misfits ("Where Eagles Dare") and hc punk (Minor Threat "I Don't Wanna Hear It"). Still, Sweatmaster sound is strongly presented in each song and you don't really have a feeling you're listening to covers. Recommended!

Teenage Rehab are super fast and quite trashy punk rock'n'roll. Sounds a bit like early Lazy Cowgirls on speed meet D.O.A.. Short tracks filled with loud guitar riffs, angry screamy vocal and wild rhythm section. Pure energy, but also here and there a catchy chorus. Cool album.

Cool Swedish 1974 revenge movie. Quentin Tarantino definitely borrowed some stuff from this movie. Young girl, mute because of being raped as a child, lives on a farm with her parents. One day she misses her bus and a stranger gives her a lift to town. After having diner he drugs her and forces her into a life of drug addiction and prostitution. But she doesn't accept this and goes for revenge. Lot of blood, action, but also explicit sex. Anyway, if you think Baise-Moi was something revolutionary and new - check this one first. Great movie and I'm glad Synapse Films made it available on DVD.

| THE V.CS - DEMO CD 2004

It's pretty unusual to get surf from UK. I only know few bands (2-3), but I can't call them surf puritans. Luckily The V.Cs are in the same vein and that's what I like. Guys are really cool - they mix surf with Devo-like new wave, using analogue synth, theremin, vocoder and even electro rhythms. Great combination, really weird and crazy. This 6 track demo CD is really fantastic. 4,50 (four and half) instros + 1,50 vocal - weird trip into the future with an old fashioned time machine. The V.Cs sent this CD some time ago and my lazy ass didn't review it till now. I just checked their web site and saw they released an EP and I'm really glad about it!!! I wish them lot of success. And if they are not angry at me because it took so long for this review, maybe you will soon read an interview with them.
