AIRBOMB "PNUK" CD, Pnuk Records 2005 |
I always judge albums by looking at the cover, but sometimes I'm wrong. Behind this not very impressive cover art, you'll find really great UK old school punk. Guys mixed some influences into their own style - you can hear a bit of early 80s Oi, old Motorhead, Ramones + 77 kbd punk, but improved with new energy and fucking great production, but trashy enough. Still the most important thing for punk are good songs - and Airbomb sure know how to do it. Songs are loaded with good melodies, great choruses, good punk riffs, short and straight to your head. They put 17 songs on CD and you just play it again after it's finished. My faves are: "Roasted", "I'm So Sick", "Your X", "Be There", ... Great band - live probably even better.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MEN "WEST COAST IS THE BEST COAST" 7"EP, Boom Boom Records |
Mummies are dead, long live The Amazing Spider-Men. Well, don't expect The Mummies copy, but The Amazing Spider-Men come really very near. Cool lo-fi trashed r'n'r surf garage. Sounds very 60s. Instro surf stuff is as good as old Trashmen stuff. I'm really speechless with their very authentic 60s sound. Looking at their masked image, I think these guys are really great attraction live. Hope to hear more from them.

| BABY WOODROSE "DROPOUT!" CD, Bad Afro 2004
As you can guess from the sleeve "Dropout!" is all cover album. If you check the records Baby Woodrose play on their turntable, you can see The Seeds, Captain Beefheart, Stooges, 13th Floor elevators... Their choice is a bit more psychedelic than garage and not the very famous tracks, but mostly previously not covered stuff. I like it 'cos Baby Woodrose don't sound too retro. Plenty of faves on this CD. "Who's It Gonna Be" (The Lollipop Shoppe) is awesome with great acid psych guitar solo. "I Don't Ever Want To Come Down" (13th Floor Elevators) is also cool, but track that really got me is "The World Ain't Round, It's Square" (The Savages - for me unknown band). Great moody trippy acid psych. But after that Baby Woodrose get more punky and heavy, stompin' through songs of Captain Beefheart, Sonics, Saints and Stooges. Whole album sounds great 'cos the different sounds are melted into weird Baby Woodrose style. Great album to get high, but also to get wild.

| BEYOND LICKIN' "RETURN OF THE PANTYHOSE SNATCHER" CD, Stardumb Records 2004
One of my favorite Dutch garage punk bands. Beyond Lickin' have lot of releases and still they sound better and better. "Return Of The Pantyhose Snatcher" is great with a bit 'old fashioned' mid 90s trashy sound. You get little bit of everything here, from rhythm and bluesy instro with cool harmonica "Bo's Dick", via trashy garage punk killers like "Skinhead Punk", "Fuzztration", "Screw It" to trashy surf instros like "Europoort" and "Soft Porn" or 70s punk like "Punk Rock Groupie". CD ends with really fucked up cover of Chris Isaac's "Wicked Game". Big plus for Stardumb crew.

| BIG SURF - ACTION HEROES CD 2004
Improved old fashioned surf sound with twangy reverb guitar. Accent is not on speed and technique, but on melody - and that's what I like. Big Surf is super cool. They flavored the songs with organ, spacey analogue synth sounds + other weird effects. Also their melodies are not usual surf stuff and these guys have really great sense for humor. As they say in their promo sheet - they're "redefining" old fashioned surf style. Redefining is really the best word to describe their version of surf. Not to sound too philosophical, few words about songs. These are my faves: "High Plains Marinara" with really weird and crazy guitar (or maybe some other instrument); "Monsta Stomp" fast, funny with weird monster effects and space analogue synth noises; "Prowl" cool jazzy surf exotica; "Falafel" fantastic orient surf - didn't hear anything so great in this style since Treble Spankers (why doesn't anybody make the whole CD in this style?);... Actually this whole CD is really great and I can go on. So what are you waiting for, go and get this @ http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bigsurf.
