SPLIT - BAD MACHINE / V8 WANKERS, Bootleg Booze Records 2004 |
Bad Machine are cool - speed rock with punk elements. "Death Race" is pretty Motorhead-ish, while "Thunderbeat" is more high energy heavy garage punk. Bad Machine will just pass through your ears and blow your brain with the light speed, and before you know it, their side of this 45 is finished. On the other side we have V8 Wankers and they are very fast too. Raw, dirty and heavy loaded guitar riffs. Both bands are winners of this race, very well organized by Bootleg Booze Records.

| V.A. "GET OUTTA PHILLY" CD, Tick Tick Tick Records |

"Get Outta Philly" is of course a compilation with bands from Philadelphia. 17 bands and here are some faves: The Minks open CD and they play raw and wild garage punk; The Chains are mod garage punk with strong 60s influence "7 Years Of Bad Luck" has cool Velvet Underground kinda 'stop and go' riff; Toothless George And His One Man Band - kinda Lightning Beatman weirdo and "Don't Fuck With Me" is really cool track; The Misteriosis is maybe the best band on this CD, "West Of Nowhere" is super cool song in Stoogees style with great Iggy kinda vocal, but with keyboard - really fantastic hope to hear more from these guys; Jukebox Zeros close this CD with "Get Outta Philly" glam punk'n'roll in late 70s style. Bands I didn't really like, but still I will mention: nu wave bands The Bad News Bats and Econocaste - sorry guys not my taste, Bad Penny - straight punk in early 80s style and Dragon City - kinda indie alternative rock.

Cool Australian comp on Out Of The Loop Records. Volcanics are kinda punk new wave with strong 80s influences. Loud energetic songs produced pretty modern. "Television Addict", cover of old Australian punk legends The Victims done by The M-16's. Cool band with that typical Australian metalic punk sound we all love, like Radio Birdman, but also other famous Australian bands. Really great band, I also hear some early Blue Oyster Cult influences. Don't know if they really wanted to sound like that, or it's just pure coincidence. Anyway one of really unusual bands and a big refreshment. The Four Stroke is the 3rd band on this comp. They start also with a cover - "No Dying In The Dark" from The Bakery. I never heard of them so I don't know the original, but The Four Stroke version sounds pretty cool. Don't know how to describe their sound exactly, Let's say some kind of desert acid punk with slight mid 70s influence. All 3 bands are from Perth and the liner notes say that's the most isolated city in the world. Anyway, it helped to develope really unusual and a bit weird way of playing r'n'r.

| V.A. "ROCK'N'ROLLA OUTTA CONTROLLA" CD, Stardumb Records 2004 |
Cool comp CD featuring 5 Dutch garage punk bands and their previously unreleased songs. CD was released as a part of Dutch tour called "Rock'n'Rolla Outta Controlla". The bands are:
Wiseguy - I didn't hear anything from these guys for some time and I'm happy they are still there, rockin' better than ever with their high energy garage glam punk. "Set Fire" is instant glam punk killer, while "Brown Sugar" sounds mucho better than any known Rolling Stones version. I hope Wiseguy will make me happy with new record soon;
69 Charger are pure sweaty r'n'r played straight from the balls - energy, rawness and cool songs. What more do you want. 3 tracks on this CD sound like Dutch answer to Devil Dogs. "This Is Rock N Roll" is Kids cover, but the other 2 tracks kick ass as well.
Stilettos famous Dutch garage without bass, but who cares. 2 supersonic fast and trashy as hell tracks + one more noisy. Killer stuff!!
Black Rodeo are bit too heavy. Riffs are OK, solo guitar is also cool, but vocal is not really my taste. Still they are punk enough so I like them. Their songs are great, if only the singer was more punk. But I guess that's a question of taste.
They say 'ladies go first', but not on this CD (hahahaha). It's probably because they are quite different from the other 4 bands. The Lulabelles changed their style more to pop punk with alternative / indie spices - the way I really don't like. "No One Knows" has slight power pop touch and it's maybe the best song. "Goodbye" is too indie, while "Miss Perfect Girl" is kinda accoustic country.

| SPLIT - SICK56 / HIGGINS++ "OUT OF A BLACK POOL" 7"EP JSNTGM Records 2004
One side of this split belongs to Sick56 - very raw street punk from UK. Cool lyrics, straight to the point, lot of anger and good songs. Nothing radicaly new, but done in the right way. On the other side, not unknown to No Brains readers - one man punk band Higgins++. This time Higgins++ is backed by band. "Cool Britania Uber Alles" is Dead Kennedys cover. Cool anti Tony Blair, Bush, war in Iraq etc. lyrics. I'm glad somebody wrote a song like this. Musically it sounds great and angry. Big + for JSNTGM Records.

| SPLIT - SUCKERSTARZ / SONICDOLLZ "ROCK'N'ROLL RIOT" CD, Anvil Corp. 2004
Battle of 2 Hungarian bands: Suckerstarz vs Sonicdollz. Suckerstarz are fantastic superfast glam punk'n'roll with Stooges, Motorhead touch. Not so heavy as Swedish bands in Hellacopters style, but more punk. Great vocal, great guitar, supergreat songs!! My faves are: "Hi-Fi Action", "Sick 76" and "Let's Make Riot". Sonicdollz are cool too. A bit different style, more glam, less rock'n'roll and bit more metalic. Alice Cooper, Stooges, Ramones, shock rock (Murder Dolls) influences, but Sonicdollz have their own style. Great songs with good guitar riffs and solos + really supercool vocal. The most fascinating is that both bands write really great songs. My Sonicdollz faves are: "Nightcrawler", "Backseat Love" and "Psychopunch". It's great to hear some rock'n'roll action from Hungary.

| SPLIT - SUPERSUCKERS / HANGMEN 7", Bootleg Booze Records

Cool split 45 with Hangmen from California and Supersuckers. Hangmen are mid tempo glam punk, pretty cool. This is first time I hear them and I hope to hear more. Supersuckers are always good. "Flying Into The Midday Sun" is not so furious, but good driving heavy glam punk. Excellent release from Swedish Bootleg Booze Records.
