LUCIFER STAR MACHINE "FIRE IN YOUR HOLE" CD, Noisemaker 2005 |
Lucifer Star Machine already sent a 7" which I didn't really dig. I thought maybe this CD will be better, although the sleeve with censored nipples didn't promise much. They play some kinda speed rock, pretty heavy, angry, fast and loud, but Tor Abyss and his vocal spoil everything. I can't say the guy can't sing, actually his vocal is pretty fascinating, but he shouldn't expose it so much. He should fit his vocal into the music and sing a bit different. This sounds like an opera singer who is trying to sing in a punk band. Maybe some people like this, but I'm not one of them. Don't get me wrong, this band ain't so bad, they have talent, maybe too much of it for this kind of music. Production is good, but songs are a bit too complicated. Somehow after 3-4 songs it starts to get too much and a bit boring. Maybe they should listen to old Motorhead stuff and do things more simple and dirty and that should do it. Tor Abyss should listen to Misfits - his vocal and its possibilities remind me of Danzig, but I already said what I think is the problem. I hope it will be better next time.

LUXXURY "THE DRUNK EP" CD-EP, Omega Point Records 2004 |
Luxury play some kind of electro wave with programmed synthetic rhythms, new wave-y guitars and 80s vocal. Luxury are pretty cool mix between The Cure and D.A.F. with gothic moments. 4 songs - all 4 real killers. My favorites are "Disco Noir" and "Drunk". Cool a bit provocative sleeve.

| MARVEL "FIVE SMELL CITY" CD, Black Juju Records 2005
My Marvel super heroes are back again. This time it's not just a short episode, but the whole album called "Five Smell City" - and I'm really happy!! On this CD there is nothing spectacularly new, just great high energy r'n'r. Marvel sound like they just came from 70s, and if you ask me there is nothing they should change - they are simply great. Loads of loud heavy acid guitar riffs, great songs, great vocal, cool guitar solos. What do you want more - it's only high energy r'n'r. It's hard to pick up faves, so I will just name some titles: "Flame On", "Goddess On The Loose", "Royal Exile", "Powers Of Attraction", "Come In Out Of The Rain". Really cool sleeve - it's a big poster with Marvel heroes in fight against the enemy super heroes.

| McLEMORE AVENUE "926 EAST" CD, 2003
McLemore Avenue are really fantastic Hammond organ groove, almost all songs are instrumental with great Hammond organ themes and also great solo guitar. Music is some kind of mix between soul, r'n'b, funk and jazz funk. Lot of different influences, from Booker T and M.G.s to Jimmy Smith and even some early 70s heavy funk stuff. It's almost impossible to pick out the faves, CD is so great with cool sphere, very groovy and I think McLemore Avenue are probably great band to see live. Great production with professional ear for details as well as arrangements. McLemore Avenue guys are really great musicians. Great rhythm section with great groove. Special plus for Patrick Barker-Benfield, one of the best Hammond organists I ever heard. Great solo guitar by Landis Armstrong with wide choice of influences which he melted into his own style. Few songs have extra percussions that make them sound even more groovy.

| MONSTERS FROM THE SURF "MONSTERS FROM THE SURF" CD, 2004
Monsters From The Surf combine surf, early 60s garage punk, rock'n'roll with good dosis of punk and samples from bad 50s and early 60s movies. Well, also some hardcore and tiny bit of country. These guys mixed it all really good and weird, just the way I like it - simple, brainless, primitive and not really cool. Monsters From The Surf didn't pay some famous artist to make the cover art, they put a bunch of pictures from the gigs in the booklet, as well as pics of their audience - but it's all so charming and really great CD for all night long party and definitely one of the better bands I heard lately. The most important of all are the songs and Monsters From The Surf really know how to do it. I must mention the drummer "Mr. Gassy" the best vocal you ever heard.
