POWERKNOBS "TURN ON" CD, Wildebeest Records 2004 |
Fast garage punk with strong 60s influence and very loud fuzz guitars as well as cheesy organ in the background. Sound is somewhere between US 60s garage rock bands and slight Stooges, MC5 (Detroit) sound. To be honest, there are too many rip-offs here. All songs sound like something you already heard before. It's all done very well and profesionaly, but it leaves me cold. Or maybe I'm not in the mood for this stuff today.

RED GIANT "DEVIL CHILD BLUES" CD, Small Stone Records 2004 |
Red Giant are another stoner rock atraction on Small Stone Records. "Devil Child Blues" album is loaded with heavy acid guitar riffs and great heavy psych leads. Vocal is in Monster Magnet style. Musically it's pretty modern view of 70s stuff: Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, early Motorhead with lot of heavy blues. But what makes Red Giant different from other stoner rock bands are good songs, great riffs and cool vocal. I also love leads that remind me of early Black Sabbath. My faves are: "Hoping For The Golden BB", "How Ya Doin' On That Time Machine", "Drip", "Funhouse" (great version of Stooges killer with Sax).

| ROCK'N'ROLL MONKEY AND THE ROBOTS "DETROIT TRAUMA" CD, DRASTIC PLASTIC RECORDS
I really don't know what to say about Rock'n'Roll MOnkey And The Robots. Not that I really like them, but not that I hate them. There is something I like here, but also something that irritates me. It's trash garage with strong 60s influences, blues, r'n'b, but also indie pop moments. Sounds like Billy Childish jamming with early Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, but more 60s and psych. The thing that I don't like is probably because they try to be Beck in garage scene and songs are a bit pretentious and not straight from heart. Don't understand me wrong, this is pretty interesting CD and there is something in their music, they should only give it a bit more personal touch. Ah fuck it, now I've gone to complicated - I don't have enough brains to write proper review for this CD.

| RODRIGUEZ FLAMINGO "EMPORIOSA" CD
"Emporiosa" is solo project of Rodriguez Flamingo from Los Banditos (organ, synth, guitar). This is something pretty different. Album is based on 1967 synth "Dr. Boehm" with rhythm box with strange exotic rhythms. "Emeriopsa" is weird mix of 60s electronic music with lot of exotica, but also new wave - specially NDW, as well as all kinds of ethno influences (from orient to old German folk music). There are lot of guest musicians on different instruments as well as on vocals. This CD is really unusual and it's definitely something you don't come across every day. I will try to name my faves: "Was geht?" (cool exotic NDW), "Gewaltsame Nachte" (reminds me of minimalism of Trio mixed with Kraftwerk), "Wodka" (funny East German answer to Champs' "Tequila" with great fuzz guitar), "Coconut Summertime" (Latin Hawaii surf exotica), "Der lange Weg" (surf easy listening exotica with nice surf solo guitar backed by cool electro minimal synth), "Auch Allah ist gross" (fantastic orient exotica, very dancy with saz - SUPER COOL), "Milan Kosmonaut" (weird East German space folk ballad),... A real masterpiece album!!

| ROSETTA WEST "ILLUMINATION" CD
Rosetta West play some kind of heavy blues, pretty depressive with grunge moments. Nothing radically new, but not so bad.
