BE MY DOPPELGANGER "ROCK'N'ROLL GENIOUS" CD, Bitchin' Riffage 2006 |
 |
Be My Doppelganger are from US and they play some kind of power pop punk
spiced with new wave (without synth, as they say themselves). Well, I don't
mind the synth. This is typical US punk with Ramones pop punk influences
from mid 90s. I can't say this is very original, or that songs are great and
catchy. It's no bad, but not really great.

CAPTAIN RAY AND THE PHANTOMS - DEMO CD |
 |
Captain Ray And The Phantoms are from Russia and they play instrumental
surf in neo 60s style. They do it on some
strange east European, or should I say Russian way. This is the surf I
really dig, it's not American, fast, Dick Dale-like surf, but more melodic
with some easy songs. Some of 20 songs are in 2 versions. Quality of sound
is really good and crystal clear and Captain Ray And The Phantoms are great
musicians. Phantoms play some covers, but there are some songs that I'm not
sure weather they're covers or band originals - but actually I don't really
care. They give their own touch to this music, all songs are put through
some kind of 'Captain Ray And The Phantoms' filter what makes them sound
more interesting from the originals we already know. I really like the
covers of "The Good, The Bad And The Ugly" and "Apache". Also "Tobogan Surf"
- great songs that I really never heard, maybe band original? I hope Captain
Ray And The Phantoms will get a proper release - I think Kamikaze Records
should be the label to do this. Anyway, really great instro surf band!!!

| CENOBITES "SNAKEPIT VIBRATIONS" CD, 2005 Drunkabilly Records
|
 |
Wow, wow, wow, this is psychobilly for my ears. Actually, I don't know if I
can call this psychobilly, but it doesn't matter - I don't care. Super,
super, super. It is psychobilly but 1000 times faster than fastest. So it
sounds very punky with metalic guitars. If you can imagine Motorhead jamming
with Misfits on 200 km/h speed playing psychobilly - that's Cenobites. Great
songs, great production, great vocal ... masterpiece CD. Only you shouldn't
listen to it while driving - hahaha. It's exremly dangerous!

| CHUCK NORRIS EXPERIMENT S/T CD, Bad Attitude Records
|
 |
Chuck Norris Experiment are from Sweden, you can hear that from the first
few chords. Typical Scandinavian hardrockin' punk sound, they remind me a
bit of Hellacopters and Bad Afro bands. 8 songs with raw screamy vocal, good
produced and with high Scandinavian level of sound quality and great songs.

| THE CRUSHERS "GLORY OF THE DAY" CD 2002
|
 |
The Crushers are first Russian garage band I got for review and to be honest
"Glory Of The Day" is probably one of the best garage albums I heard lately.
18 songs, maybe the only bad thing about this CD, I always prefer albums to
be short. Not that the songs are not good, but I just think that this kind
of music is the best to hear on albums 12-14 songs long. But, OK that's not
so important at all. I guess nobody will complain about too many songs,
specially from a band as good as this one. Neo 60s style in English - for
the ones who are garage purists - personally I would love to hear garage in
Russian. All the praise for the singer - great snarly/screamy vocal and you
really can't hear the famous Russian accent at all. Also praise for the
great production and songs. Sound of the 60s is almost completely
reconstructed. And if you didn't know it was new band - you won't be able to
see it from the looks of these guys - it's all so 60s like. Songs are full
of fuzz and cheesy Vermona Organ (I'm not a specialist for vintage
instruments). Fantastic CD - songs are somewhere between US garage and UK
freakbeat with Kinksy riffs. I think you can say that The Crushers are
Russian answer to Satelliters and a really good one. So I guess The
Satelliters have pretty strong rivals. I really hope The Crushers will
manage to tour around Europe and that they'll visit Holland too. I forgot to
say that 17 songs are writen by The Crushers, and one is by Mark Smith (The
Creatures Of The Golden Dawn).
