THE DRIP DEMO CD |
The Drip are from Chicago and they are fucking GREEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAT. This is 100% my taste and done really good. Influences are from begin 70's (Stooges) as well as bands like Dictators, New York Dolls and early US punk bands. 70s Glam punk - somehow timless, The Drip sounds oldfashioned and modern at the same time. Drip rocks and kicks ass. I'm glad to see that there is a split 7" on Wrecked Em Wreckords. I was already getting angry about how great bands don't get released these days, but I guess there is always a lable who has good taste. I hope The Drip will release a full lenghth soon. All 10 songs are punk rock classics, only not yet known.

THE DT'S "NICE'N'RUFF - HARD SOUL HITS VOL.1" CD, Get Hip Records 2006 |
Covers of 70s hardrock songs with soul groove done in heavy hard rock psych style with girl vocal. Unfortunately, DT's versions of these songs were less than what I expected. I expected something more dirty and band who is more in MC5 style with screamy female vocal. But DT's sound a bit amateur, like some band from local pub. They play good and vocal is OK, but they need to be more excentric, they need so called 'x factor' (a popular word now here in Holland, so let me use it once in my reviews) - something crazy, maniac and something that singers like Iggy Pop have, something that will push them further from being just a good cover band. They need raw power. By the way THE DT'S check out how The Soulshake Express (also reviewed in this No Brains Zine update) do it!

| THEE FINE LINES "LOOKING EVERYWHERE EP" 7"EP, Licorice Tree 2006
Thee Fine Lines and Licorice Tree Records are known band and label for No Brains readers. Thee Fine Lines are back with their garage punk in Billy Childish style. Nothing radical new, just good old garage punk - raw primitive and good for my ears! One more great release on Licorice Tree Records.

| FIXED IDEA "TRADITIONS OF MY ADDICTIONS" CD, Broken Bonez Records
Fixed Idea are back, this time with 9 new songs. Ska punk, well, more ska than punk, but too raw and primitive to be just ska. Catchy songs, great musicians, good production. Ska punk is not so popular as it used to be about 10 years ago, but Fixed Idea deserve to be big and popular as Rancid once was. My faves are: "Rude Boy", "Pluck It" (a bit too short, they could have made it at least 2 minutes long) and instrumental "La Bomba".

| FOUR EASY PIECES "BIRTH OF THE UNCOOL" CD, Last Shot Records 2006
As they say in their promo sheet, Four Easy Pieces influences are from The Kinks to The Damned To Johnny Thunders - 60s 70s and 80s punk. To be honest they described their music perfectly. 77 style punk played loud and modern with their own touch - no retro shit, but pure-blooded punk madness from Seatle. All 13 songs kick ass - great riffs, vocal and production!!
