AGE OF JETS - DEMO CD 2007 |
Huh, this is a tricky one. If I understand the press sheet correctly, Age Of Jets are originally British band who now has new line up in Japan - with 1 English, 1 Japanese and 1 Italian member. Tracks are written by so called "silent members of the band" - obviously members from UK who don't rehearse or play gigs in Japan. And I guess they all take part in making music. Anyway, this thing with members is so confusing just like their music. Age Of Jets have strong 80s influence. Specially new wave and minimal synth electro with programmed drum machine and cheesy 80s keyboard/synth sounds with today's production. It's a bit too complex - I miss normal pop song structure. It's too commercial to be experimental and it's too experimental to be commercial. I also miss a bit of originality. I think this could be great, if Age Of Jets just make it a bit more simple.

| BLACK MAGIC SIX - EVIL ACUPUNCTION CD, Ahky Records 2008
Black Magic Six are 2-man-band who's original attention was to be a big band, with 6-7 persons - I guess that number 6 in their name comes from original idea. However, this is 2-man-band that really sounds like much more. They like to cooperate with other musicians and they invited lot of guests. Music is also quite original. They sound like The Monsters beating up White Stripes. Killer songs!!! I hope to catch time and go see them in Tilburg this month.

| DISGRACE - DEGENERATION II 1997/2005 CD, Big Money Recordings
Disgrace are from Finland and it seems that they are active for quite some time now. They started in early 90s and this is compilation of all recordings they made (good and bad ones, as they say). Mix of garage punk and 70s hard rock - famous Scandinavian recipe prepared pretty good. Some tracks are a bit more polished, wile the others are more raw and wild. But all of them are evil enough. Great band.

| THE DURANGO RIOT - TELEMISSION CD, Fuzzorama Records 2007
Boredom is this bands reason to make music. It's pity they don't have a better reason. Their music is mix of garage and 70s with touch of grunge and stoner rock. A bit typical Scandinavian action rock sound in vein of bands from Bad Afro label. I would prefer just a bit more tempo and shorter songs.

GEORGE KOREIN - TOO MANY DAYS CD Peacific Records |
If you want to hear something completely different and totally weird, try George Korein. Weird mix of new wave, free jazz, experimental, electro and noise rock. It's not too experimental, but don't expect poppy songs. I can't say I like it, but it's definitely original.

MISS 45 - STEALS THE SHOW CD, No Talent Records 2008 |
Miss 45 are back with their 1st full length. I'm really happy to hear all is well with this great band that now rocks better than ever. "Steals The Show" is perfect r'n'r album and it has to be part of your collection. It's one of those albums you'll put on more often cos all tracks are genius. It's just the right dose of pop and the right dose or rock to make it perfect. It's powerpop punk the way it should be with loud guitars, melodic songs - some fast, some mid tempo, great vocal and all together very catchy with a little bit of 70s spices. So guys when are you coming to Holland?

POISON IVVY - OUT FOR A KILL CDr, Planet Trash 2007 |
Here we have already legendary Swiss trash punk band - Poison Ivvy. This is their 4th album - they play since 1990. 13 snotty punk'n'roll tracks spiced with some surf sounds. Poison Ivvy didn't change much in their sound. New portion of pure energy, sweat and great noisy trash punk guitar riffs. Actually there are 16 tracks + video on this CDr, but unfortunately I didn't manage to hear last 3 and I was also not able to see the video. I guess my computer had some problems due to video track.

TRUCK FIGHTERS CD, Fuzzorama Records 2007 |
Truck Fighters from Sweden - very weird and great band. Their music is somewhere in-between stoner rock and alternative rock with 70s prog psych moments and loads of fuzz and effects. Very hypnotic with simple and nice, but strange melodies. Loud and noisy, but sometimes gentle. Vocal is a bit unusual for this kind of music, but fits really nicely. Promo sheet says they toured with Fu Manchu after having only 1 full length album released. This is their 2nd release, so you should really check them out.

UGLY BEATS - TAKE A STAND CD, Get Hip Recordings 2007 |
"Take A Stand" is 2nd Ugly Beats album with slightly different sound comparing to their debut "Bring On The Beats" where they sounded more powerpop and punk. Here they sound more sike-pop with garage punk touch. I really like "Take A Stand" - nice collection of sike-pop pearls with awesome arrangements. Vintage sounds melted into modern style. Such albums were made in 60s and 70s, but rarely nowadays. These guys and girl really have talent.

LOS IMBASILS / THE MANTAWRAYS SPLIT 7"EP, Cyclone Records |
2 new British bands on 1 EP. It's pity they had to go on 1 EP, I would prefer separate EPs of each of them as they really kick ass. Los Imbasils are British answer to Mummies. Don't worry, they don't try to sound like Mummies. They just have trashy vintage sound and lot of energy, but they sound a bit more British, kinda Downliners Sect, Headcoats and Mummies jamming together. Great vocal, not so monotone like Billy Childish. Only it's pity they play 2 covers and not something of their own. Split side belongs to Mantawrays - trashy surf with psychotic exotica touch. Vintage sound, but still a bit unusual. I can hardly wait to hear more from both of these bands. I love this EP. If you're in Bristol or somewhere near, make sure to visit these guys club - Giggsy's Barber Shop at St. Michaels Hill.
