20 MINUTERS "DING DONG DADDY AND PING PONG MAMA" 7"EP, Trashcan Records 2003
Finish bands have often very unique sound. 20 Minuters are original mix of garage, psychobilly, blues and something of their own, and guess what - they are from Finland! This 7"EP "Ding Dong Daddy And Ping Pop Mama" is weird record, trashy psycho-blues-billy guitar, raw and wild sax + psycho vocal. I also like their rhythm section - very wild and primitive with probably double bass. Cool debut 7"EP on Trash Can Records - also new label for me. I think if you like stuff on Goodby Boozy, you'll dig this too. And I hope there will be more good stuff from this band and label.

THE BABIES "THE BABIES" CD, 2003 Dancing Bear
Babies from Zagreb, Croatia are definitely one of the best surprises I got for review this year. Supercool mix of late 70s rockin' punk and garage punk, just the way I like. If you like Slaughter And The Dogs, Real Kids and similar stuff - you will love The Babies. Great vocal, loud punk guitars, cool riffs, pumpin' rhythm section and simply fantastic songs - do you need more?! 14 songs - 12 originals (all in english) and 2 covers (Jonathan Richman and Slaughter And The Dogs). Some of my favorites: 'Want You', 'Hard Rock Asshole', '1973 Kicks', 'Burn This Town', 'Not Your Lil' Doll' and 'She's Gone'. Highly recommended!!!!!!!!!!

BASEBALL FURIES "GREATER THEN EVER" CD, Big Neck Records
Baseball Furies are not bad, but not so great to me. It's just question of taste I guess, 'cos if you like a bit different stuff then me, Baseball Furies could probably be great band for you. I like a bit different kind of punk than what they play - they are fast a bit noisy with screamy vocal, but they have something too hardcorish. They change too much - riffs, rhythms ... and I miss melody a bit. It's a bit pity cos Baseball Furies have lot of good moments on this CD. And if they were just a bit less noisy and hardcore and if they put a bit more melody, they could be band I like. Anyway, try to check them out, they have something.

LES BATON ROUGE "MY BODY - THE PISTOL" CD, 2003 Elevator Music
Les Baton Rouge are one of those riot grrl bands with two guys, or riot boy bands with two girls. They are from Portugal, but they moved to Germany. Their music is mix of early punk, 80s new wave and bit of feminist shit. Musically I like it, but lyrically I think some songs are stupid - actually just very naive. Songs like 'Women In Control' about right less Islamic women, sounds like Bush brainwashing. For the ones who wouldn't mind this kind of lyrics I would recommend this CD. Music is really good, as good as Epoxies or Lost Sounds - if not better. Loud punky guitars, screamy girls vocal, great songs that remind me a bit of Au Pairs. Speaking about Au Pairs, they are actually the only feminist band I like, just because their lyrics were good - they did it without preaching and moralizing. Ok, back to Les Baton Rouge - it's not really retro new wave, but 80s new wave influence is really obvious. Production is also great and it's great album anyway if I stop grumbling about the lyrics.

BITCH BOYS "BEHIND THE HOUND DOG WALLS" CD, 2003
Bitch Boys are one of my favorite instro surf bands. Well, if you read No Brains reviews and interviews, you already had chance to meet these guys - and I hope get their CD. "Behind The Hound Dog Walls" is their newest (at least latest as I'm really late with this review) released on Ikebana rec. Bitch Boys will definitely kick your lazy surf ass!!! 'James Bond Theme' opens their 2nd album. It's great cover, but I prefer when Bitch Boys play other kinds of songs - like 'Final Ride' (beautiful guitar melody) or 'Match One' (super cool mix of US surf and East Euro sensibility - if you can imagine Dick Dale playing Russian ska). 'Batman Theme' goes to same category as 'James Bond Theme'. Don't get me wrong about this, these 2 songs are zillion light years far from bad, but they were covered quite often. Somehow Bitch Boys are best when they play songs where they can put more emotions in their sound. 'Na Golici + Regiment Po Cesti Gre' (probably 2 Slovenian folk traditionals) sound really great. Well to beat all I said so far about their 'James Bond' and 'Batman' covers - they did marvelous and unusual cover of 'Wipe Out' - hahahaha. Maybe I should just keep my mouth shut and enjoy the music. Anyway you get 18 great songs + 1 bonus track. Well, almost all of them are my favorites, but some I like just a bit more then others. So I must mention: 'Teenage Surf Vampires (fucking great title!!!!) - surfing after midnight can be dangerous fun, 'Bitchoola' - with nice and mystic and romantic sphere, sunny and moody 'Stay Close To Me' will melt all snow and ice and keep you warm this winter. And now something really innovating - hip hop surf 'Walk Don't Run Mr Eminem' with scratching guitar. Really really great and it came right on time. I was listening to Eminem a lot last summer - so this was nice surprise. Great combination 'Without Me' and 'Walk Don't Run' - great job guys!!!! One more song to warm you up this cold winter is 'Devojko Mala' - real beautiful instrumental version of early 60s Yugoslav pop hit. There are also cool covers of 'Misirlou', 'Apache' etc. - anyway - just get this CD and enjoy it!!!!
