THE VON DOOMS
"FROM BEYOND" TAPE
Reanimator Records 2001
Von Dooms are duo and they play some kind of punk which sounds pretty 80s and it's very difficult to
compare with some other band. Songs are very short and not really fast. Drums sound like drum machine
- or maybe I'm wrong. I have to be honest, but after some time it becomes a bit boring 'cos songs are very
similar. They are almost in the same tempo without good chorus.

V.A. "BRING FLOWERS TO THE WORLD" LP
Misty lane Records 2001
Well it's not usual that we review 60s reissues and comps in No Brains zine, but we got some stuff from
Misty Lane so why not review it then. "Bring Flower to The World" is international, or so called
transworld comp with pop psychedelic bands from Canada, Germany, Greece, Holland, Nigeria,
Yugoslavia, Italy... You get 20 songs and lot of info about bands. We'll concentrate more on the music.
Magic Cycle (Canada) open A side with pretty poppy and catchy psych sound. Boots (Germany) are
bit more heavy, but Liga (Greece) are really so cool and one of my favorites on this record. It seems that
song is from Pop Festival 73 compilation. It's great folk influenced psych and sung in greek. Shoes
(Holland) are psych souly pop, Young Enterprise are pure pop psych with lot of psych sound effects,
echoes,... The Sounds (Greece) are one more great Greek band - great psych influenced by Greek folk
with catchy melody (sung in greek) and great wah wah solo guitar. I have few comps with 60s bands from
Greece, but I have to be honest there are no such great songs on them. Strangers (Nigeria) are pretty
souly/early reggae influenced op with cheesy keyboard in background. Pesky Gee (UK) are more
progressive than psych to me, while The Hunters (Holland) play nice and moody psych with flute. Also
one of my favorites. Bobby And Laurie (Australia) are some kind of progressive pop. Daltons (Greece)
are one more really great and cool band from early 70s also sung in greek with flute and excellent guitar
solo. I hope somebody will make all Greek early 70s psych pop comp (sun in greek) 'cos these 3 bands
on this record are really mind blowing. Lords (Germany) play typical moody pop psych ca 1967. Astrali
(Italy) do very primitive "Eight Miles High" cover in italian. Nicols (Holland) are just one more good
Dutch band from 60s. Indexi (Yugoslavia) are one more favorite from this record for me. Their song from
1967 is not sung in english and it's great pop psych in the best way of early Barrett/Floyd style with
strange composition and parts with flute. Rob Hoeke R'n'B Groep is one of my favorite Dutch bands.
They are unfortunately not so known and famous like Q65 or Outsiders. Here they play very strange
r'n'b pop psych with orchestra - I like this song a lot. The Mops (Japan) close this record with pretty
good cover of "Letter". So this is almost CD length, but I prefer shorter compilations 'cos the sound is a
bit better then. Anyway if you are collecting trans world 60s records - this one must be part of your
collection.

V.A. "THE MINIMAL SQUAD OF TEENAGE MONSTERS CIRCUS" 7"EP
Frat Shake Records 2001
Wow, wow, wow - this record looks great. Really great sleeve and spotted heavy 7" vinyl with all
together 6 songs. Hero-X open A side with "Transmutation" great instro trash surf with nice guitar and
cheesy keyboard. Los Mutantes "Go To Action" - tones of fuzz, superfast trash punk. Hero-X again with
"Teen Trash" - this time fast and fuzz punk with great vocal. On B side we have Stef And Arno "Felicia
Mentor" - great trash surf. There are also 2 songs by Magnetix - lo fi trash punk band in style of
Mummies, maybe even more primitive. I really like this 7". try to get it 'cos it's fucking great record.

V.A. "PUSHING SCANDINAVIAN ROCK TO THE MAN! VOL. 2" CD
Bad Afro 2001
Here is great compilation CD with all Scandinavian bands - but you could guess that from the title. There
are 16 great garage punk songs by 12 bands (hope I counted good). Anyway you get lot of good garage
punk inspired by 60s/early 70s r'n'r with slight touch of mid 80s Scandinavian garage punk scene. So here
you go:
Royal Beat Conspiracy open CD with "Here Comes The Girls" - they can do much better, but this song
is also very good. The Chronics are also very good, but Maggots sound great and "Gonna Make You
Pay" is real neo 60s punk killer. After a bit heavy and hammond Flaming Sideburns, Mother Superior will
kick your ass with primitive and keyboard driving 60s punk "Have You Seen That Cat". With Burnouts'
trashy "No Erection, No Love" tempo goes higher. The Rockets are really not my favorite (a bit mid
tempo), but I must admit their guitars sound really great. Branded Women are nicest surprise on this CD
- I never heard them before, but their "Not A Love Song" is real mind blowing psychotic and psychedelic
trash garage punk/psychobilly with really great vocal and scary keyboards. I hope to hear more from
them - this song is very promising. Festermen is bluesy supersonic band. And then again one of my
favorite bands - Royal beat Conspiracy with "Had To Be A Woman" strongly influenced with soul.
Believe me, but The Stones didn't sound better on "Exile On Main Street". Then one more new band (at
least for me) Columbian Neckties which sound like hardcore version of MC5 with really great vocal, mind
blowing guitars and of course great song "Born To Rock'n'roll" - I definitely want to hear more from this
band. Peepshows are solid band, but I like Mother Superior's "Stand Up And Be Counted" a bit more.
Till the end we have one more song by Burnouts and Chronics' nice and catchy "Shine On Me" and The
Dialtones who play energetic 60s punk with great riffs. So if you don't have anything from Bad Afro
Records yet - this CD is nice label introduction.

TRAVOLTAS/THE APERS "BEATING UP THE SCHOOLGIRLS" SPLIT 7"EP
Stardumb Records 2000
This is split 7" with 2 Dutch pop punk bands sounding like The Queers. This kind of punk is really not
my taste so it's difficult for me to write objective review. Apers are bit more punk and Travoltas are bit
more surf punk.
