JOHN WOO PROMO CD 2003
John Woo is Italian answer to nu wave. Fast trashy punk with strong new wave influence. Comparing with many nu wave bands I heard, John Woo belongs to the top together with A Frames, Lost Sounds, Les Baton Rouge. I specially like their original approach to nu wave - using of strange strong structure and synth. Also vocal is a bit weird and goes really good with the rest. I think their song titles are really cool (I don't really get them all, but who cares): "Sasaki Yumeka", "Logout Theme For Nabuk", "Negative Cars, Crashing Feelings" ... To be honest I heard this CD few times and I like it more and more. First hearing it was OK, but I wasn't that impressed, like I am now - after few listenings - so if John Woo music don't get to you straight, give them few chances and you will love them for sure. They are too weird and you have to get used on their songs and sound a bit. Great band, I hope to hear more from them.

KAVOLCHY "ONE IN FIVE/UGLY MACHINE/REVOLUTION, EVOLUTION" 7"EP, Squirrel Records 2003
Kavolchy is one more great band from UK ready to take over your heart. Garage punk riffs with strong post punk and new wave influence - these 3 girls and guy will blow your mind. Great female vocal, good songs and fresh sound for your ears - Squirrel Records released one more great record! One of best surprises from last year.

THE KISS COWBOYS "THERE'S A TRAIN GOIN' ON" CDr
Woooooow I really like the sound of this band. When first riffs of "Meet The Wildest Guys" kick your ears you just want to hear more of this great raw distorted guitar sound. These girls / guy really know how to record their stuff. Wild garage punk rock from Marostica - Italy. On the moments they remind me of Jewws, one of my fave bands that doesn't exist anymore. What I like here is that songs are bit different from each other, so you really don't get bored listening to this. It's hard to say which song I like most - The Kiss Cowboys kick and roll and I love it!!!! I'm getting pretty disappointed in garage scene lately and I can't say that there are many bands that I really dig. I even didn't buy that many records this year, but this is definitely something I want to have on vinyl!!!! Labels - I really strongly recommend this band!!!!!! Fucking great!!!!

THE KNOCKOUT PILLS "THE KNOCKOUT PILLS" CD, Dead Beat Records 2003
I really don't know what to say about Knockout Pills. It's punk, but they definitely have their own style. Info sheet says that this band is for the fans of Catholic Boys, Teengenerate, Saints, Superhellicopter, Jewws, Radio Birdman etc. Well I think you can not be fan of all these bands as they are pretty different - at least to me. They all play punk, ok, but they are totally different. Unfortunately I'm not really a fan of Knockout Pills. They are ok, but their style is not the punk I like.

MARVEL "HEROINE TRACKS" 7"EP, Black Juju 2003
Marvel have supercool image that goes great with their music - they look like marvel comics heroes (at least on the drawings). Their music is strongly influenced by mid 70s hard glam rock, proto punk bands. They have great 70s production and they sound like Blue Cheer, MC5, New York Dolls with something of their own, so comparison with these famous 70s band is not really the best one. Great vocal, cool heavy acid psych fuzz guitar sound, groovy rhythm section - Marvel are so called power trio. I'm really fascinated with this 4 song EP and I hope to hear more. Great band!!! Oh, you also get the cards with everything you ever wanted to know about these super heroes - really cool. This is why I love records - not only that you can enjoy the music, but also the sleeve and what you get extra sometimes.
