THE BLACKOUTS "LIVING IN BLUE" CD, Lucid Records 2004
It's not easy to describe The Blackouts sound. It's garage punk evaluated into alternative indie pop. I really don't know how to find more known bands to make good comparison. Try to imagine Cure playing garage punk with Brit pop and acid psych influences. I know it sounds weird and it really is. Very original band with cool songs that definitely deserves more attention. What I specially like about The Blackouts is really cool fuzz guitar sound and Cure-like vocal. My faves are: "Fire In The Puring Rain", "I Have Found My Next Train", "Sun Won't Rise" and "Open Casket Access". I wish these guys lot of luck and I hope somebody big will discover them. You also get 2 bonus tracks on this CD.

BOSS MARTIANS "THE SET-UP" CD, MuSick Recordings 2003
Boss Martians definitely build up their own style from 60s garage, surf, late 70s/early 80s punk and new wave. Their songs are very catchy and could appeal to very young audience too. Maybe garage puritans don't like this 'cos Boss Martians also have something that reminds me of pop punk bands like Green Day, Blink 187. Well, I needed a bit to get used, but honestly I wouldn't mind if there were more such bands on radio or MTV.

CROSSFIRE "ROCK'N'ROLL POWER" 7"EP, Bootleg Booze Records 2003
Crossfire, from Sweden are pretty cool neo rockabilly - raw and wild, but at the same time they sound very relaxing. They are trio with cool rockabilly sound, a bit bluesy vocal, great guitar sound and most important each song is a killer. And the most most important - no covers!! I really love this record. "Ed's Gettin' Married" is my favorite, but the other 3 tracks also kick ass.

DAWN OF THE DEAD, 2004
Direcor: Zack Snyder
Cast: Jake Weber, Mekhi Phifer, Sarah Polley, Ving Rhames
Zombies seem to be in again. Well, nothing wrong with that. I was a bit skeptical about this new version zombie classic, but I must admit this one is not bad at all. Well, I guess you know the story - people trapped in shopping center and surrounded by zombies. Only this time zombies are no slow motion dumb creatures, well they are still dumb but they are fast as hell - zombies on speed. I like this!! I love old zombie movies, but sometimes I get inpatient waiting for one of them to move his leg. This is better. There are some funny moments here too - like the pregnant women with zombie baby (where have I seen this before - hahaha)... Certainly worth seeing!!!
THE DETONATIONS "STATIC VISION" CD, Alive Records 2004
Here is the debut album of Detonations. If you are a regular No Brains reader, you should already know The Detonations. Well, this CD is a bit different from their 7". Their punk with strong late 70s roots is now slightly mixed with new wave and alternative / indie influences. I think we can blame their producer Jerry Teel (Boss Hogg, Yeah Yeah Yeahs ...). The Detonations sound more powerful, their songs are short and straight to the point. 11 songs, lot of cool riffs, trashy vocal that goes perfect with raw guitar sound. If you can imagine Jon Spencer Blues Explosion play late 70s kbd punk favorites, you will get a rough idea how Detonations sound. My faves are: "Static Vision", "Your Gonna Get It", "Victim" and "I May Care". The Detonations are good band and I'm glad they try to do something different - not to sound like an ordinary kbd punk band. They sound fresh and aggressive.
