In last 2-3 years I heard lot
of Italian bands. I really didn't know that scene there was so huge (at
least comparing with scene in Holland), but one band really got my
attention and I collected all their stuff (well I got lot of it from the
band self, 'cos lot of records are not available in local record
shops anymore). Name of the band is The Nerds. What I specially like in
their music is their own vision of garage punk music. I think that it's
pretty fresh and gives another dimension to garage punk cliché.
Mixing some other influences, The Nerds created really refreshing sound
and their album "Just Because She Didn't Wanna Fuck" is real masterpiece
for me. As they say "The Nerds are four beer guzzlin' weirdos ... since
1997, they deliver an evil brand of alcoholic punk rock".
Their 1st 7"EP is split with Orange Juice From The Crypt. Nerds side
is almost hardcore. Four ultra fast and short songs - 3 originals and one
cover "Radiation Masturbation" (Authorities) which is really great song.
Also The Nerds' songs are great. My favorite is "You Are An Asshole". Orange
Juice side is also pretty good. Fast (early 80s hardcore) punk.
2nd and 1st solo 7"EP is more punk rock. More in Rip Off Records
style with 4 songs with funny names like "I'll Kick You In The Balls" (which
is my favorite on this 7"). They are also doing "The Todd Killings" (Angry
Samoans) cover - anyway great 1st 7".
2nd solo 7"EP "I Wanna Kill Your Plastic Slut" sounds more powerful
and production is also better. Musically it's still super fast punk somewhere
on the edge with hardcore. Here we have again 3 Nerds originals + one cover
- this time great version of GG Allin's "I Wanna Rape You".
"Fellowship Of The Fat Shit" is comp with 4 bands: Nerds and Grabbies
- Italy + Pricks and Idyls - Sweden. Each band plays 2 songs - so you get
8 songs what is really tough for 7". Nerds didn't change their style much.
It's still super fast punk. Grabbies are more trash and their recordings
sound pretty lo-fi. Idyls are also pretty trashy while The Pricks are similar
to The Nerds, but not so great.
....and then comes
"Just Because She Didn't Wanna Fuck" album and The Nerds can go
into history. They invented hardcore garage punk death metal. It's super
noisy, it's super fast and super wild and after you hear it you'll have
nightmares for the rest of your life. You may think that this combination
of hardcore speed, garage punk trash and death metal vocal can't be good
- first hear it 'cos it really kicks ass!!!!
Recently they did 7" split with Frankenstein Drag Queens From Planet
13 and it's really great. The Nerds go on in tradition of their album and
Frankenstein Drag Queens just rock in their great horroric glam way. Watch
out 'cos these 4 Satan rising punk losers together with 3 glam punk zombies
are gonna take you straight to hell.
