I think it's totally unfair that US and UK bands can easily find a place on our record / CD players and to hear and get anything from South America is almost impossible - at least here in Holland, but I think in other countries as well.
This special will probably not be enough to get lot of people interested in garage punk and underground r'n'r scene of South America. But at least you get a chance to read about them and visit their web sites and maybe hear some songs there and I hope order some CDs!!! All these guys really deserve it!!! Not just because they work very hard, play and sweat as nobody else to keep this thing going on, but their music is really REFRESHING and GREAT. Many of them have their own style - everybody should respect that. It's easy to copy your favorite bands, but it's difficult to give your own vision of music you like. I'm really glad all these bands exist, play and put out CDs. I'm also very glad there are labels who believe in them!!!! I would like to thank them all for sending these great CDs!!!!!! I'm sorry it took so long to finish this special, but I think it's never too late. And you, dear fucking reader try to get at least few of these CDs 'cos you really don' know what you're missing if you don't hear it - THE BEST GARAGE PUNK R'N'R AT THE MOMENT IF NOT EVER!!!!

FORGOTTEN BOYS "GIMME MORE!" CD, Thirteen Records 2003
Forgotten Boys are from Brazil. I know Brazil is huge country and lot of great stuff is being recorded there, but unfortunately sometimes we need years or decades to discover all these great bands. At the moment we are all busy here with discovering Brazilian 60s and 70s music and I hope we won't wait 30 years to discover today's bands. I try to make it happen earlier. So let me introduce the Forgotten Boys. It's 70s style glam punk rock trio. They look really cool and they are from Sao Paulo and they have great songs!!! Their influences are New York Dolls, Sex Pistols, Johnny Thunders, but also Marc Boland And T. Rex. It's such fucking great album. Gustave (vocal + guitar) sings super cool and he is great guitarist too. Chuck (bass + vocal) + Flavio (Drums) are great rhythm section. They have some guests on keyboard and harmonica and that way the sound is even more powerful. Forgotten Boys really kick ass and this is one of the best CDs I got lately.

THE HATES "EVIL DOLL" CD, Scatter Records
The Hates are from Argentina. They are really cool and trashy garage punk. I like alternative and indie influence in their straight garage attitude. Although the vocal is bit distorted with effect - to me the singer has almost the same voice like the guy from Blur (Damon or something like that). I really like it and it sounds super cool. Also I like their drummer 'cos he has that nice groovy rhythm feeling. I know that The Hates didn't think about all this when they were recording - it probably just came out like this. Anyway it sounds really great. "Evil Doll" is also great mix between their songs and covers - from Flamin' Groovies, Pretty Things to standards like "Fortune Teller" and "Stupidity". By the way I think "Fortune Teller" must be the most covered 60s song after "Louie Louie" and "Hey Joe". But you won't believe me - The Hates can write songs that sound better than all these famous garage killers. "That's The Price" and "Dead Autumn Leaves" are really mind-blowing. "Dead Autumn Leaves" has really great guitar solo. "Don't Try To Help Me" sounds like Milkshakes only with more energy and better vocal. Riffs are also great. Great album by the band with one of the best names ever.

MANGAZOIDES "SOBREDOSIS DE HORROR" CD, No Fun Records
Mangazoides are from Peru. I heard about this band while ago (few mp3s on net) - and this is, I guess, their first full length album. Album starts with mind-blowing version of "El Condor Pasa" which they called "El Condor Pasta"! It's the best version ever - cool spaghetti surf garage. Other songs are vocal - great mix between surf punk and garage. I specially like that they sing in Spanish. Mangazoides are very original. Maybe you have to get used a bit to their sound, but once you do - you'll love them. It's super great garage psych punk with lot of surf influence - loud fuzz guitar and cool psychedelic organ (vox?). Vocal is pretty strange, well at least for garage punk band. I needed a little bit time to get used to it, but I think Rafo has really original style. After few songs I really like his way of singing. Well, it sounds like some mutation between punk and black metal singing. Album contains 20 !!!! songs and all of them are GREAT. Album is great balance between Mangazoides own songs, few covers (Los Saicos, Third Bardo and Q 65) and instrumentals. "Lluvia De Fuzztones" is sung by Diego, I guess he plays organ (teclado) - but my Spanish is not really good, so sorry if I make mistake here. This is great album!

LOS PEYOTES "PSYCHOTIC REACTION" CD
Los Peyotes are primitive trash garage surf with strong cult 60s and spaghetti western influence. It's really great mix of everything I like - loud fuzz guitar, psychotic horror organ - great vocal, groovy rhythm section. There are 8 songs - 4 vocal and 4 instros. CD sounds so great and it's too short. Well, everything that's good always lasts too short. Unfortunately. But, you can always play it again and again and again ... I hope to hear more from Los Peyotes. Just look at this cool sleeve and I hope you can get idea how great Los Peyotes are. Pure South American psychotic reaction at its best!!!!!!

SATAN DEALERS "THE BRIGHTEST VIEW" CD, 2003 Scatter Records
Satan Dealers - definitely cool name for a band. They don't just have great name, but their music is great too. As many South American bands they also have their own style. They are influenced by late 60s, early 70s stuff like: Rolling Stones, MC5, Stooges, New York Dolls, but also some 80s influence - like Cure. Rockin' and post punk guitar riffs, screamy loser vocal, great rhythm section. It's really difficult to imagine how they sound. To me this CD is also very confusing, but this is very original band. There are 11 songs - 1 cover - really strange choice "Bette Davis Eyes" (do you remember this 80s hit by Kim Carnes?). It's difficult to choose the favorites, all songs have more or less same quality. I guess if Satan Dealers were from UK, they would be on front page of NME. I like such bands cos they sound very refreshing and they don't take garage punk template too serious.

THE TANDOORIS "WALKING BLIND" CD, No Fun records
We already know The Tandooris from compilation EP on Butterfly Records. "Walking Blind" is their first full length album. It's great garage punk - 12 kick ass songs by this power trio. It's not easy to describe Tandooris sound - they sound a bit like 80s garage punk bands, actually if you can imagine early 70s hard rock sounded band plays garage punk. Their songs are cool and catchy with nice loud heavy fuzz guitar. Record is produced very well. What I specially like by The Tandooris is the groovy Latin psych sphere in their music 'cos here and there they use congas and other percussions, cool organ and even analogue synth. My favorites are: "Sweeter And Higher" (latin garage punk - like Santana meets Fuzztones), "Can't Be Undone" (60s garage psych mixed with glam punk), "Two Bells" (like Rolling Stones from deep garage punk hell) and "Chemical War" (heavy rockin' killer - perfect closing track). I also must not forget really great vocal! You gotta keep in mind this band 'cos "Walking Blind" is not only great album, but it's real masterpiece with very original sound and great songs.

LOS ULTRASONOROS "RUMBLE" CD, No Fun Records
Los Ultrasonoros are instro cult surf band strongly inspired by Link Wray. They are, I think, from Uruguay, but I'm not 100% sure. It's really cool band. Actually they are not really pure surf, it's instrumental garage surf exotica - lot of groovy rhythms and fuzz guitars. Actually, there are not many bands on the world who play like this - well at least, I don't know any. CD starts with really weird version of "Rumble" played on trumpet. Los Ultrasonoros play lot of covers, but they give them their own touch and they do that in special way. All these tracks sound totally different and super cool. My favorites are: "California Sun" (totally fuzzed version), fuzz and groovy "Commanche" and "Straitjacket". The other tracks are also really great. Album has special sphere and it's great record for wild parties.

SPLIT - THE CROW KING AND THE HARDFINGERS / THEE CORONADOS CD, No Fun Records
First band with 7 songs are Thee Coronados, I guess from Argentina. They are great primitive trash garage punk with strong MC5, Stooges influence, great loud rockin' r'n'b guitars, great vocal with Iggy influence and here and there honky tonk piano. But again, Coronados have something of their own, something I can describe, but it's good to my ears. I love this band. They have great songs. I hope they will release a full length soon - these 7 songs are not enough for me - I want more. The Crow King And The Hardfingers are from Brazil. Their style is similar to Coronados so these 2 bands are really perfect for this CD. The Crow King And The Hardfingers are a bit more r'n'b and not so trashy, but also (as well as Coronados) strongly influenced by early 70s stuff - think Rolling Stones, Flamin' Groovies, New York Dolls etc. But don't get me wrong, they have their own style. If you can imagine early Rolling Stones go 100% punk. Singer has also very similar vocal to early Jagger! They are also good song writers. This CD is simply a killer!!!!

SPLIT - EVIL IDOLS / MOTOSIERRA CD, LaJa Records
This split CD is definitely proofing that the best fresh blood for r'n'r comes from South America. Evil Idols are super cool and great punk'n'roll. On this CD they have 7 songs. Evil Idols have something old and something new in their sound. Their music is strongly based on good old punk from late 70s / early 80s, but improved with hardcore / Motorhead energy. Don't get me wrong - they are no hardcore punk, just snotty, sleazy, sweaty punk'n'roll. My favorites are "Trouble Guy", "Road Drugs And Wine" and really cool covers of "Something Wild/Tonight" (The Infections) and "Ain't Nothing To Do" (The Dead Boys). 3rd cover is Motosierra song - "Burn". And what to tell about Motosierra again? Their 8 songs are marvelous - as always. Super fast trashy punk'n'roll. This time recordings have the sound similar to later GG Allin stuff - fast, hard, angry, trashy, but also melodic. I can't choose any favorites - all 8 songs are killers, but 1 song is just a bit better than the rest - "Idiota". There are 3 cool covers "Bite It You Scum" (GG Allin), "Nervous Breakdown" (Black Flag) and "Drunk Fool" (Evil Idols). Great CD!!!!!

SPLIT - FORGOTTEN BOYS / KILLERDOLLS CD, Spicey Records
You could read the review of Forgotten Boys' full length above. I think recordings on this split are done before album - and as I already said Forgotten Boys really kick ass!! Their songs on this split are in the same style like on the album - 70s style glam punk rock. 6 songs - all 6 killers. I'm glad that Forgotten Boys approved that they are extra ordinary great band!! Killerdolls are new for me. They are from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Their music fits perfectly with Forgotten Boys. They also play glam punk'n'roll in the best New York Dolls style. Influence of Radio Birdman is also strong - they even covered "I-94". Killer Dolls really kick ass and this is super CD.

SPLIT - MOTOSIERRA vs CULPABLES CD, Rastrillo Records
Well you can't imagine the special about South American bands without Motosierra. Split with Culpables is super great. Motosierra play super fast garage punk as usually. "I Hate Rock'n'Roll" is definitely one of the best Motosierra songs and one of the best r'n'r songs ever. This band just doesn't slow down - they even speed up and they rock till they explode and till you explode. Motosierra play 7 songs - all are killers!!! Just check some titles like: "Hail Satan", "Iron Balls", ... great covers of Saints' "Wild About You" and Fear's "I Love Living In The City". Actually what I like most about this band is their 1000000000000% PURE PUNK R'N'R ATTITUDE!!!!!! I know only 1 more band with such attitude - Motorhead. If you get it - great, if you don't get it - fuck off!! I know it's not easy to do split with Motosierra and sound even great as them, so Culpables had very difficult task. But honestly they kick ass too. They are from Brazil (I think) and they play in similar style like Motosierra - super fast punk'n'roll with hardcore speed. Great production, great band - to lick your fingers. Very refreshing new blood. I really like that they don't sing in English - big plus for me. Culpables have 8 songs on this CD. My favorites are: "Perra", "Obsession", "Culpable" and "Mambo". I hope to hear more from this band cos they are really super!

SPLIT - PHANTOM SURFERS RACE AGAINST THE TORMENTOS CD, Scatter records
Battle of two surf bands: Phantom Surfers (USA) vs Tormentos (Argentina). Phantom Surfers play 7 songs. After many records, they didn't change their style much - fast slight trashy instro surf. My favorite is weird cover of "Istanbul". "The Last Ride" also features Davie Allan on guitar. Also great - "Poison Clam". The Tormentos play wild and very technically precise instro surf with nice melodies, reverbed guitar sound, hot rhythms - you can feel warm Argentinean sun and smell of race car rubber. The Tormentos or Los Tormentos wrote all 7 tracks - no covers. My favorite is "Ride Sunset Devil" - great spaghetti western surf with great and catchy melody.

V.A. "MUSICA DE HORROR PARA GENTE DE HORROR!" CD, Estrambotico
"Musica De Horror Para Gente De Horror" is compilation with 7 Peruvian garage punk bands. We already know the first band - Mangazoides. They have 3 great songs here which you can also find on their CD "Sobredosis De Horror" (check the review above). Just a few words about them - they are great, wild - garage punk at its best. Next band is Aeropajitas with only 1 song "Iluvia Acida" - weird, wild and psychotic garage punk with strange effect on vocal, loud fast guitar and manic wah wah solo guitar - strong 70s and kbd punk influence. Tres Al Hilo have strong 70s influence too - if you can imagine raw and wild mix of early 70s Rolling Stones, Stooges and MC5 with lot of kbd punk spices, you can get an idea how Tres Al Hilo sound - heavy guitars + acid solo guitar, raw as hell vocal and solid rhythm section. They play 3 songs here and all 3 are really cool. Tres Al Hilo really have their own style. Eximios have girl vocalist, maybe there are more girls in this band, but there are no details or photos on this CD. They also have 3 songs here, very weird style, so try to use your imagination again: melt kbd post punk, garage punk and psych with new wave girl vocal. Sounds very original, very cool and apocalyptic. Great band! Los Arman have unfortunately only 1 song - their style is rockin' punk'n'roll. "Mujer Perdida" is pure kbd punk. Sounds like it was recorded 25 years ago - mindblowingly great. Guys please record more stuff!! Espirales are really weird mix of punk and psychedelia - they sound very depressive, great solo guitar, cool vocal. I really don't know how to describe their music, very original and cool sound. Imagine garage punk played by very early Hawkwind. Los Vengadores Del Dr. No are pure kbd punk, great song - better than lot of songs you can hear on kbd compilations. This whole CD sounds totally out of time. When you play it you really can't say this is recorded after 2000. It sounds very old school. Great bands, very original styles, all lyrics in Spanish (very important to me) - great great great CD. Raw, primitive and very cool!!!
